Lonnie Franklin Jr. Arraigned
on March 25, 2011 in Serial Killers by Brian CombsLonnie Franklin Jr. was arraigned by a grand jury Friday for the murder of ten women. This puts him on an accelerated track towards trial.
Generally, prosecutors would have presented evidence against Franklin at a preliminary hearing. This would be to convince a judge to have Franklin stand trial.
But eight months after Franklin’s arrest, the date of the preliminary hearing still hasn’t been set. So, District Attorney Steve Cooley opted to turn to a grand jury instead.
Six days of testimony and forty witnesses convinced the grand jury that there is sufficient evidence against Franklin. A trial is the next step, but no date has been set.
