Sture Bergwall Acquitted of Therese Johannesen Murder
on June 11, 2011 in Serial Killers by Brian CombsSwedish prosecutors dropped their case against Sture Bergwall (formerly known as Thomas Quick) for the murder of 9-year-old Norwegian girl Therese Johannesen, citing lack of evidence. Bergwall was granted a retrial in March, but the move effectively acquits him.
Bergwall is already serving a life sentence in a psychiatric institution after being convicted of eight murders. He confessed to thirty.
He recanted his confession in 2008, claiming he was under heavy medication and seeking attention. Many people do think he is innocent of many of the crime to which he confessed, but he did know details of some of the crimes that were withheld from the public.
His convictions were based solely on his confessions, as there were no witnesses or forensic evidence.
