Luis Garavito may be Extradited to Ecuador

Luis Garavito was convicted in Columbia for the rape, torture and murder of 138 young boys in 1999. He sentences should have totaled several centuries in prison, but at the time, Columbian law limited anyone to being sentenced for more than thirty years.

Due to his cooperation with authorities, his sentence was reduced to 22 years. As a result, he is scheduled to be released in the next few years.

The prosecutor general in Columbia says that instead of simply releasing Garavito, he may be extradited to Ecuador. He is wanted there for the murder of a group of children.

The director of Columbia’s prison authority also suggests that Garavito could also be tried for additional murders.

It sounds like authorities are working hard to ensure that Garavito is not released to the public.
