David Leonard Wood Expands his Appealon August 9, 2011 in Serial Killers by Brian Combs
The defense team of David Leonard Wood is trying to overturn his 1992 capital murder verdict. They have requested an expert review of the DNA evidence from his trial, and are looking to prove that he is mentally retarded.
Wood has a hearing today to determine his fate.
A scheduled execution of Wood was halted to give his team time to prepare his case.
Court records show that Wood held a drivers license, handled his own divorce paperwork, and received about two years of college credits while an inmate. That would be a neat trick for someone who is mentally retarded.
The DNA examination could be interesting. Wood’s cases were investigated in the late 1980’s. DNA procedures were not as established as they are now, and it’s not impossible that evidence was handled poorly.
