Anthony Sowell Sentence Goes to the Jury

on August 10, 2011 in Serial Killers by

At 3:45pm Tuesday, the jury in the Anthony Sowell mitigation trial was given the case. They will be sequestered until they reach a decision.

The jury can either recommend the death sentence, or life in prison without parole. If they recommend the death sentence, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose can override their decision and impose life in prison without parole.

He cannot impose the death sentence, if the jury does not recommend it.

In his closing statement, Assistant County Prosecutor Rick Bombik read the names of each of the eleven victims, and asked:

A life sentence in jail ladies and gentlemen, where’s the punishment?

In his own closing statement, Defense attorney John Parker said:

What the state is asking you to do is eliminate this man from the face of the earth. Let’s stop the cycle of violence and put this case to rest.
