Investigators: Single Killer Responsible for Bodies at Gilgo Beach
on November 30, 2011 in Unsubs by Brian CombsNearly a year after they began finding bodies on and near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, investigators now say they believe a single killer is responsible for all ten victims.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said:
Our theory is the serial killer is working alone.
The sex workers dumped in the same place, the ages of the victims and even though we did have a male and a toddler’s remains found, we believe that they may be connected to the sex business.
The remains of eight women, a man, and a female toddler have been found. Three partial sets of remains have been connected to other parts found a considerable distance away.
The bodies were discovered during the search for Shannan Gilbert, also a sex worker, who disappeared May 1, 2010 after she ran from a house in nearby Oak Beach. Investigators do not believe the cases are linked. Said Dormer:
We believe that it’s just a coincidence that she went missing in Oak Beach and the bodies were found on Gilgo Beach, which is right across Ocean Parkway and farther west. The M.O. is completely different, the scenario is completely different.
Investigators also believe the unsub is a local due to the disparate locations where bodies were dumped. Said Dormer:
The theory is that it’s a Long Islander.
That’s a huge distance, so somebody has to be familiar with the Long Island area and comfortable with that area.
