John Leslie Coombes Denied Appeal

on December 9, 2011 in Serial Killers by

Justice Bernard Bongiorno of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia has rejected the appeal of John Leslie Coombes. Coombes was attempting to receive a minimized term on the life sentence he received for the murder of 27-year-old Raechel Betts.

Justice Bongiorno pointed out that the minimum sentence he could receive would be 35 years. As Coombes is almost 57 years old currently, that would take him into his 90’s before he was eligible for parole.

As a result, Bongiorno said the appeal was without merit.

Coombes pleaded guilty to murdering Raechel in 2009. He admitted to dismembering her in a bathtub and throwing her remains off of a pier.

Coombes was convicted of murder twice before, but had been released.
