Loren Herzog Commits Suicide

California officials have confirmed that Loren Herzog was found dead this morning, after hanging himself in his trailer.

Herzog was known as one of the Speed Freak Killers, after he went on a drug-induced murder series with childhood friend Wesley Shermantine. They were both convicted of three killings and sentenced to 78 years to life, but Herzog’s conviction was overturned on appeal.

He then pleaded to lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter, received a shorter sentence, and was released on September 18, 2010. But no matter where California parole authorities tried to place him, there was a huge community outcry.

As a result, Herzog had lived in a trailer outside the High Desert State Prison in Lassen County since his release.

One of the conditions of Herzog’s release was that he wear a GPS ankle monitor. Yesterday evening, it notified his parole officer that its power was low. The officer sent a prison official to check on him, when he was found dead.

The Lassen County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at 12:30 a.m. this morning.

Shermantine remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison.
