Itzcoatl Ocampo May be Deteriorating Mentally

Shortly after his arrest for the murder of four homeless men, Itzcoatl Ocampo was reported to suffer from psychological problems. It appears that he continues to deteriorate while sitting in jail.

He was placed on suicide watch last weekend after banging his head against the toilet in his cell in the Men’s Central Jail in Santa Ana, California.

Randall Longwith, Ocampo’s attorney, said:

It seems what happened was he heard voices, and he has these headaches and twitches that are plaguing him. He got on his knees and tried to bang (the voices, twitches and headaches) out of his head on the metal toilet.

Ocampo was placed in a safety gown which prevents inmates from hurting themselves, on March 2nd. It was removed on March 5th, but he remains on 24-hour watch in a solo cell.

Longwith heard about the incident on Monday, and met with Ocampo Wednesday. According to Longwith, Ocampo briefly discussed the situation, then “clammed up.”

Ocampo is due back in court tomorrow. I expect Longwith will be filing a motion that Ocampo is unfit to serve trial.
