David Simelane was convicted in Mbabane Wednesday of killing 28 people. This makes him the deadliest serial killer in Swaziland history.

His trial dragged on for over five years, largely due to a never ending series of filings. Late in the trial, he challenged his confession, claiming it was coerced.

Judge Jacobus Annandale ruled the confession admissible, but bemoaned the lack of DNA evidence.

Simelane is believed to have killed from the late 1990’s until 2001. A tip-off lead police to shallow graves all over the country.

In total, 45 bodies were found. Several were pregnant women. Simelane was charged with 34 murders.

It is believed that Simelane lured the women with job offers. The advanced state of decomposition made it impossible to determine if the women had been raped.

Sentencing has been set for April 1st. Simelane faces the death penalty.

Mduduzi Mabila, Simelane’s attorney, says they plan to appeal.
