Carolyn McCrary was born in the United States, in 1928. She later married her future partner in crime, Sherman McCrary. Together, the two had a daughter, Ginger, and a son, Daniel. Ginger married a man, Raymond Carl Taylor, and the family went on a killing spree throughout the United States.
It is believed that the murder series began in June of 1971, when Carolyn McCrary was 43, and continued for the next 6 months. Most of the victims were female, because that is what the males in the family preferred. The women were usually kidnapped while the family was robbing a store. They were put into the getaway car and raped for hours or days and then murdered. Although Carolyn McCrary claimed to not take part in the rapes, it is not known if she murdered any of the victims. All of the victims were shot to death with the same guns. The victim’s were discovered nude on the side of the road or were found in the McCrary home.
The McCrary and Taylor family were arrested in June of 1972, after they robbed a store and shot a police officer. The officer survived and gave a description of the getaway car and the robbers. There was not enough evidence to charge them all with murder, so Carolyn McCrary was only charged and found guilty of harboring fugitives and some other minor offences. When asked why she let her family commit these crimes, Carolyn stated that the women who were raped and murdered were “no kin of mine.”
