Helen was born in 1931, and was a resident in Santa Monica, California.
Before her murder series, Golay met her partner in crime, Olga Rutterschmidt, in the 1980s. According to records, the pair began their criminal careers when they would steal purses and credit cards. They decided that these petty crimes were not providing them with enough money, and so they began to get insurance policies through homeless people and planned to murder them afterwards.
The murder series began on November 8, 1999 and ended in 2005. They preferred to murder male homeless men. The victims were between the ages of 50 and 73. The men had their identities stolen years before their murders. Golay and Rutterschmidt would take out insurance policies on the men and after murdering them, would claim millions of dollars.
In October of 2006, the women were arrested for two murders and conspiracy to murder. In April of 2008, Golay was found guilty of conspiracy to murder and the first-degree murders of Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid. Rutterschmidt was also found guilty of conspiracy to murder, but only found guilty for the murder of Paul Vados. Golay was sentenced to life in prison in California Federal prison, without the possibility of parole.
