James Edward Wood was born on December 9, 1947, in Louisiana. At a young age, Wood’s father was incarcerated and his mother died in a potato processing plant fire. Wood was known to have a hatred towards authority figures and had violent sexual fantasies. At the age of 14, Wood stole a car and set fire to dumpsters. Wood committed his first rape at the age of 22 and is believed to have raped 85 women throughout his lifetime.
Wood’s committed his known murder in 1993, at the age of 46, but is thought to have began his murder series in 1976, at the age of 29. His victim had been raped prior and after her death, shot to death and then dismembered. Wood preferred to murder his victims with a gun. His known and suspected victims were female. Wood threw his victim into the lake after she had been dismembered.
On July 6, 1993, Wood was arrested. He was found guilty for the murder of his one victim and was sentenced to death by lethal injection on January 14, 1994. Wood died of a heart attack on February 1, 2004, while he was on death row.
