John Martin Crawford was born on March 29, 1962. He was born in Steinback, Manitoba. Crawford was born the first of three children in his family. At the age of 3, Crawford began to try to run away from home. It is believed that he was molested by a babysitter at the ages of 4 and 7. Crawford began to sniff glue, drink and take prescription drugs by the age of 12. Crawford claimed that he would hear voices in his head that tormented him.
Crawford’s murder series began in 1981, at the age of 19, and ended in 1992. Crawford was arrested after his first murder, was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1989, Crawford was released from prison. He continued his murder series in 1992. All of his victims were Native American females, most of whom were known prostitutes in the area. Crawford’s victims were raped prior to their deaths. The women were either stabbed or strangled to death. Crawford had a partner, Bill Corrigan, for the murder of one of his victims. Crawford met his partner in crime while serving his prison sentence for his first murder. During his murder series, many prostitutes in the area reported to the police that Crawford had taken them to remote locations to rape, beat and choke them. Crawford moved the remains of his victims so that they would be difficult to find. Two of the victims were buried.
In January of 1995 Crawford was arrested for the murders of his 3 victims. He was convicted of second degree murder for the murders of Calinda Waterhen and Eva Taysup and first degree murder for Shelly Napope. Crawford was sentenced to 3 concurrent life sentences. He is currently serving time in Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.
