Trial of John Thomas Straffen, TheLetitia Fairfield and Eric P. FullbrookAmazon

John Straffen was born on February 27, 1930, in Bordon Camp, Hampshire. He was born the third child in his family. At a young age Straffen was sent to a Child Guidance Clinic for stealing and truancy. In 1939, Straffen was brought before the court for stealing a purse from a girl. He was later taken to a psychiatrist and it was found that he did not know the difference between right and wrong and was sent to a residential school for mentally defective children. At the age of 17, Straffen threatened a 13 year old girl, strangled 5 chickens and stole from a home. He was found to be mentally retarded and was committed to Hortham Colony in Bristol. He was discharged in 1951.

Straffen began his murder series in 1951, at the age of 21, and ended in 1952 . All of his victims were females between the ages of 5 and 9. His victims were all strangled to death and some were beaten. Straffen did not make any attempt to hide the bodies, instead he would leave them in the open at the crime scene. He never gave any reason as to why he chose those girls or what the motivation was behind the murders.

On August 9, 1951, Straffen was arrested for the murder of Cicely Batstone. He also confessed to another murder. He was charged with murder on August 31, 1951. He was found unfit to stand trial and was sent to Broadmoor Institute. On April 29, 1952, Straffen managed to escape from the institute. On this same day he committed another murder and was rearrested. In July of 1952, Straffen was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death, though this sentence was later changed to life imprisonment. On November 19, 2007, Straffen died in prison of natural causes.
