Joseph Roy Metheny was born in 1955 in the United States.
Metheny began his murder series in 1976, at the age of 21, and ended in 1995. He would usually stab or strangle his victims to death. He is known to have murdered both men and women, though he was only found guilty for the murders of the women. He did not leave the women at the scenes of the crimes, but would bury them elsewhere. Metheny would often mutilate the bodies and also save some of the flesh for later. Metheny earned the nickname of The Cannibal Killer because during his murder series he had opened his own open-pit beef stand and it was from here that he would serve human meat mixed with pork. He later claimed that you could not tell that human meat had been mixed with the pork. He often saw his victims as a source for meat, instead of people. Metheny had stated that when he murdered two homeless men it was out of anger for his wife running away and taking their son. His wife was a drug addict who was charged and their son had been taken away. Metheny never felt bad for the lives he took.
On December 15, 1996, Metheny was arrested for attempted murder after one of his victims managed to escape by jumping over a fence. He was later charged with the murders of three women, though he confessed to murdering 4 women and 3 men. He was sentenced to death, but this was later overturned to a life sentence on July 24, 2000.
