Juana Barraza was born in 1956 in a rural area north of Mexico City. Barraza was born to an alcoholic mother who allegedly traded her to a man for three beers. This man is known to have raped her many times and even caused her to become pregnant. In total she had four children, all of which are believed to be fathered by the same man.
Barraza was obsessed with lucha libre, which is a popular form of Mexican professional wrestling. She wrestled many people and earned herself the name “The Silent Lady”. Prior to her arrest it was believed that the serial killer was a man that was simply dressed in women’s clothing to gain access into homes.
It is believed that Barraza began her murder series 1990. She is known to only murder women over the age of 60, who would typically be living alone. Barraza would pose as a social worker to gain the trust of her victims. She would carry a stethoscope, pension forms, a social worker card to help her gain the trust of others. After they invited Barraza into their home she would strangle or bludgeon the victims to death. Barraza would then steal any belongings she saw that had any value.
On January 25, 2006 Barraza was arrested for the murders of 10 people, but was thought to be involved in as many as 40 murders. She confessed to murdering 4 women, but later recanted this confession. On March 31, 2006 she was found guilty on 16 charges of murder and aggravated burglary. Barraza is still serving time in Mexico.
