Martha Beck was born on May 6, 1920 in Florida.
Beck had many problems throughout her life because of a glandular problem which caused her to be overweight. This glandular problem also forced her to reach puberty prematurely. According to records, Beck was sexually assaulted by her brother and because of this was beaten by her mother who thought Beck was responsible.
Beck’s weight caused her to have difficulty finding a job as a nurse, so she ended up taking a job as an undertaker. Beck was unmarried and had two children when she decided to make a lonely hearts ad. This is how she met her future partner in crime Raymond Fernandez in 1947. The couple would later be known as “The Lonely Hearts Killers” because of how they originally met in a lonely hearts ad.
Beck began her serial series at the age of 29. Both Beck and Fernandez were arrested on February 28, 1949. They were charged with three murders and sentenced to death. Both were executed by electric chair on March 8, 1951.
