Marybeth Tinning was born on September 11, 1942 in New York. She was born the oldest of two children. According to records, Tinning had a fairly normal childhood. She originally claimed that she was abused by her father, but later recanted the story.
Tinning began her serial series in 1972, at the age of 30. All of Tinning’s victims were her children, and all of them were murdered before the age of 3. During interrogation concerning her last murder, Tinning confessed to murdering her children by smothering them to death. Prior to her arrest the children were all said to have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
On February 4, 1986 Tinning was arrested for murdering her last child, Tami Lynne. Her third born child, Jennifer, died from natural causes and so police did not press charges for this death. Tinning was convicted second degree murder for the death of Tami Lynne and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on July 17, 1987. Although she confessed to other murders the cases had to be dropped as there was not enough evidence to convict Tinning.
