Paul John Knowles was born on April 17, 1946 in Florida. His father gave Knowles up to live in foster homes and reformatories.

Knowles began his life of crime with petty theft and was in prison by the time he was 19. He was released from prison and began his murder series. Knowles was arrested again in 1974, but escaped from prison when he picked a lock.

It is believed that Knowles began his murder series in 1974, after his escape from prison. The majority of his victims were strangled to death, but some were also shot. Knowles would murder both men and women. The main goal for many of these murders was theft. Many of the bodies of his victims have never been found.

On November 21, 1974 Knowles was arrested for the murders of 18 people. On his way to the police station Knowles picked the lock on his handcuffs and grabbed the officer’s gun. During the struggle, Investigation Agent Ronnie Angel shot Knowles’ three times, killing him. Although Knowles was arrested for the murders of 18 people, it is believed that he was involved in over 35 murders.
