Russell Maurice Johnson was born in 1947.

His murder series is believed to have started in 1973, at the age of 26, and continued until 1977. All of his suspected victims were females between the ages of 20 and 49. The causes of death for his first 4 victims were originally thought to be natural, but upon further inspection some of them had been sexually abused. Johnson would sneak into the bedrooms of his victims and would often watch them as they slept. His first 4 victims had been smothered to death, while his last 3 victims were either strangled or stabbed to death. His last few victims had been raped either pre or postmortem. Johnson was known to go as far as to climb up 13 stories on the outside of buildings to reach the apartments of his victims.

Johnson was arrested in 1977 for the murders of three women. In February of 1978, Johnson was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sent to the maximum-security wing of the Ontario Mental Health Centre. He is known to have murdered 7 victims, but is suspected in 10 other murders and 17 sexual assaults.
