Thomas Edward Luther was born on June 23, 1957 in Hardwick, Vermont. He was the first of 5 children born in his family.

Many of Luther’s problems began when he was young. It is believed that Luther began drinking at the age of 9 and was using drugs by the age of 12. Luther also claimed that at the age of 12 he was having sexual intercourse with his aunt. Prior and throughout his murder series, Luther had a criminal record for rape, sexual assault, assault and attempted murder.

Experts claim that Luther’s murder series began in 1982, though he has not been formally charged with the murders from that year. All of the victims that had been discovered had been shot to death. One of his victims had a finger and her lips cut off. The victims were all Caucasian females between the ages of 20 and 21. They were raped prior to their murders. Experts claim that all of the victims had striking physical similarities to Luther’s mother. Only one of the victims was buried.

On January 25, 1995 Luther was sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexual assault in the first degree. It was not until 1996 that he was charged for the murder of Cher Elder, whose remains had been found the year before. On February 6, 1996 Luther was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to 48 years in prison. This will begin when the time is served for his other offence. Luther has since been sentenced to another 50 years for the attack and rape of a woman in 1993.
