Anthony Sowell House Being Demolished

on December 6, 2011 in Serial Killers by

As expected, the former house of Anthony Sowell, where the remains of eleven women were found, is being torn down. The City of Cleveland condemned the house in September, citing infestations by vermin and a lack of structural soundness after the bodies were excavated.

Family members of Sowell’s victims received hand-delivered letters yesterday informing them of the plans. Crews began gathering at 6:30am, and demotion began just after 7:00am.

Vanessa Gay, a key prosecution witness, was on hand to witness the destruction of the home in which she testified that she was raped by Sowell. Vanessa said:

It took me back to that room, back to that day.

It’s a start, it’s a start. This is my life. This is something I live with everyday. No sleep from it. But it gets better. It going to continue getting better. Not going to dwell on it. I’m going to turn a negative into a positive.

It’s already better. It’s already better.

The property is owned by the mother of Sowell’s stepmother. She will be given a bill for the demolition.

If it goes unpaid, the city will take ownership of the property.
